DEFINITION

 

Direct, manage and coordinate the activities and operations of the Visitor and Convention Bureau (VCB) including administration, leisure/group sales, marketing, Visitor Center, community awareness and outreach; coordinate assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies and tourism related organizations; and provide general information and assistance to tourists and the public.

 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives general direction from the Economic, Convention, and Visitor Services Department Head.

 

Exercises direct supervision over professional and clerical staff.

 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

 

1.  Assume management responsibility for assigned services and activities of the Visitor & Convention Bureau including marketing, sales, administration, and Visitor Center.

 

2.  Develop and implement goals, objectives, policies and priorities; recommend and implement resulting policies and procedures.

 

3.  Identify opportunities for improving customer service, identify resource needs; review with appropriate management staff; implement improvements.

 

4.  Direct, coordinate and review the work plan for Visitor & Convention Bureau activities and projects; assign work activities and projects; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems.

 

5.  Oversee the development and implementation of the division marketing plan with assistance from the Department Head.

 

6.  Select, train, motivate and evaluate Visitor & Convention Bureau personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures.

 

7.  Serve as the liaison for the Visitor & Convention Bureau with other divisions, departments and outside agencies; negotiate and resolve sensitive and controversial issues.

 

8.  Oversee and participate in the development and administration of the facilities annual budget; participate in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; implement adjustments.

 

9.  Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints.

 

10.  Provide responsible staff assistance to the Department Head.

 

11.  Conduct a variety of organizational studies, investigations and operational studies; recommend modifications to programs, policies and procedures as appropriate.

 

12.  Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of travel and tourism.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of:

 

Operations, services and activities of a visitor and convention bureau.

Advanced principles and practices of marketing and advertising.

Principles and practices of program development and administration.

Various points of interest, surrounding tourist attractions and programs and services offered by the City.

Research methods and sources of information related to service area.

Principles and practices of municipal budget preparation and administration.

Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.

Methods and techniques of effective report preparation and presentation.

Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

 

Ability to:

Experience and Training Guidelines

Minimum Requirements:

 

 Experience:

 

 Four years of increasingly responsible group sales or marketing experience, including one year of previous lead or supervisory experience.

 

 Training:

 Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in marketing, communications hospitality management, recreation, or a related field.

 

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

 

License or Certificate

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Colorado driver's license.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Environmental Conditions:

 

Office and field environment; travel from site to site for trade shows; extensive public contact.
