DEFINITION
Perform a variety of duties involved in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of street and traffic signs, markings, and related traffic signal systems; perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Traffic Supervisor.
PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Design and fabricate a wide variety of traffic signs using a computerized sign machine; identify and prepare supplies and equipment needed for each assigned project; install and repair signs as needed.
2. Participate in the construction and installation of traffic signals; participate in on-site troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal control devices, systems, and auxiliary equipment.
3. Lay out, maintain, and install new traffic control striping; paint, tape, lane lines, center lines, crosswalks, arrows, stop bars, railroad crossings, parking stalls, and other pavement markings; use preformed thermoplastic for assigned markings; remove existing markings no longer needed.
4. Set up safe and effective traffic control, including street barricades and cones, prior to the performance of maintenance and construction activities to ensure public and worker safety through work zones; re-route and control traffic around work sites.
5. Inspect the condition of assigned traffic systems equipment; install, repair, and replace equipment and facilities as necessary.
6. Operate a variety of equipment including forklift, hi-lift bucket and platform trucks, road marking equipment, loaders, backhoes, power tools, and other specialized maintenance and construction equipment; perform safety and maintenance inspection on assigned vehicle(s); perform routine vehicle repairs in the field.
7. Perform necessary updates to assigned database system; input work orders, update maps, and track inventory; gather information necessary to maintain database.
8. Respond to regular and emergency calls for service as appropriate; assist sign crew as needed.
9. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Operations, services and activities of a traffic control sign and road marking program.
Methods, techniques, materials, equipment, and tools used in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signs, markings, and related traffic signal systems.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Traffic control methods.
Basic principles and practices used in traffic signal and street lighting construction, maintenance and repair.
Principles and practices of record keeping.
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Modern office technology and equipment, including computers and related software applications.
Applicable tools and equipment operations.
Applicable Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
Fabricate, install, maintain and repair traffic signs.
Perform semi-skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned.
Use and operate hand tools, vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
Learn the geography and street system of the City.
Set up effective traffic control.
Establish and maintain accurate records, logs, and files.
Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.
Troubleshoot and solve basic electronic traffic signal defects.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations.
Operate and use modern office equipment including computer and various software applications.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
One (1) year of increasingly responsible public works field maintenance experience including experience in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of street and traffic signs, markings, and related traffic signal systems.
Training:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
License or Certificate
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver’s license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain appropriate valid certifications from the IMSA.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid ATSSA Worksite Supervisor certification.
Some assignments within this classification require the possession of a valid Colorado commercial driver’s license.
Some assignments within this classification may require specialty certifications relative to the area of assignment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand for prolonged periods, perform repetitive motions, kneel, squat, stoop, climb stairs, reach above shoulders, and repeatedly twist the upper body a significant part of the time. The employee is also required to walk a major part of time, lift heavy objects (25 – 75 pounds), and pull very heavy objects (more than 75 pounds) regularly. The employee is required to see, hear, talk and sit.
