DEFINITION

 

Perform a variety of electronic repairs and maintenance on traffic control units and equipment including traffic controllers, vehicle detectors and traffic signal control computers; maintain, repair, modify and install traffic signals, streetlights, fiber optics, electronic systems and related apparatus; perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Receives direction from the Traffic Supervisor.

 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

 

1.  Perform a variety of electronic repairs and maintenance on traffic control units and equipment including traffic controllers, vehicle detectors and traffic signal control computers.

 

2.  Perform repair, inspection, maintenance and installation of assigned traffic signals and school clocks; replace bulbs, wiring, fuses, circuit breakers, ballasts and signal head parts; program and maintain electrically operated flashing school zone clocks and signs.

 

3.  Install and maintain overhead and underground traffic signal communication cabling; pull wires and make electrical connections required to tie in wiring, signals, and vehicle detectors and control cabinets.

 

4.  Repair and install pedestrian fixtures, traffic signal fixtures, optically programmable fixtures and inductive vehicle loop detectors at intersections.

 

5.  Operate a variety of equipment including dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, cranes, boom trucks, power and hand tools, and other specialized maintenance equipment including volt meters, locators, and laptop computers.

 

6.  Direct and control the flow of traffic during repairs, installation or modification of traffic signals.

 

7.  Perform underground locates for signal power and fiber optic lines as requested.

 

8.  Maintain accurate and detailed records of traffic signal plans, schematics and signal timing specifications; update records as maintenance is performed.

 

9.  Respond to regular and emergency calls for service as appropriate; assist sign crew as needed.

 

10.  Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of:

 

Principles and practices of electronics as applied to traffic control devices.

Materials, methods, techniques and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of electric and electronic traffic control devices.

Methods, techniques, materials, equipment, and tools used in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of street and traffic signs, markings, and related systems.

Operational characteristics of computerized traffic control systems.

Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Principles and practices of record keeping.

English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Modern office technology and equipment, including computers and related software applications.

Applicable tools and equipment operations.

Applicable Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.

 

Ability to:

 

Observe signal operations, verify timing, monitor physical connections and verify communications.

Diagnose defects and repair electrical traffic control devices and related equipment.

Install and maintain overhead and underground traffic signal communication cabling.

Read and interpret schematics, blueprints and diagrams.

Monitor and operate computerized traffic signal controls.

Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public and City employees.

Operate a variety of electronic repair and heavy equipment.

Establish and maintain accurate records, logs, and files.

Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations.

Operate and use modern office equipment including computer and various software applications.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Speak, read, write, and comprehend the English language at a level necessary to accomplish job requirements.

 

Experience and Training Guidelines

Minimum Requirements:

 

 Experience:

 

 Three (3) years of increasingly responsible traffic signal maintenance or electronic experience.

 

 Training:

 

 High School Diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by college level course work in electronics, fiber optics, or a related field.

 

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted

 

License or Certificate

 

Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire, a valid Colorado Class "A" Commercial driver's license.

Possession of, or ability to obtain appropriate valid certifications from the IMSA.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid ATSSA Worksite Supervisor certification.

Physical Conditions:

 

The job is characterized by:

 

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

Position requires hearing, talking, sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25-100 pounds is also required. This outdoor position works in all weather conditions. Materials and chemicals used may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the employee to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.
