DEFINITION
Perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on City vehicles and equipment; perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Automotive and Heavy Equipment Supervisor.
PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Perform preventive maintenance on a variety of City vehicles and equipment including changing oil, installing filters, checking fluids and lubricating chassis.
2. Inspect mechanical systems and equipment and perform routine repairs; inspect and change hoses, belts and lights; replace, mount and balance tires; inspect, adjust all types of brakes systems, replace batteries; report major repair needs; assist other shop personnel in repair and maintenance as required.
3. Perform cleaning of equipment, vehicles, and assigned work areas.
4. Perform after market equipment installation on assigned vehicles, light, or heavy equipment; determine if immediate attention is needed and report issues and concerns to senior staff.
5. Operate a variety of maintenance and shop equipment including brake lathes, automotive diagnostic equipment, tire machines and hand and power tools.
6. Maintain and repair shop equipment; dispose of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
7. Prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports, and logs.
8. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Methods, equipment, tools and materials used in minor repair and preventive maintenance of gas and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
Operational and repair characteristics of light and heavy equipment systems including brake, cooling, charging and lighting systems.
Requirements of maintaining City vehicles and equipment in a safe and clean condition.
Principles and practices of record keeping.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Applicable tools and equipment operations.
Applicable Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
Perform a variety of preventive maintenance and repair on City vehicles and equipment.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Operate a variety of maintenance and repair equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Diagnose problems with vehicles and equipment.
Use and maintain a variety of shop tools and equipment.
Establish and maintain accurate records, logs, and files.
Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience and Training Guidelines
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience in preventive maintenance and repair of vehicles and motorized equipment.
Training:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by specialized training in preventative maintenance and routine repair of gas and diesel powered equipment or a related field.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
License or Certificate
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Colorado Class B commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, Air Conditioning Recovery and Recycle certification.

The following physical activities are very or extremely important in accomplishing the job’s purpose and are performed on a daily basis:
Position requires hearing, talking, sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25-100 pounds is also required. Materials and chemicals used may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the employee to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment and drive motorized vehicles.
