DEFINITION
Perform survey technician work in the field and office using both traditional and computerized methods; plan work, equipment and supplies required; conduct field surveys using survey equipment; review, analyze and troubleshoot survey data; maintain equipment; prepare summaries of field work.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives supervision from the City Surveyor.
PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Perform a variety of technical field survey work for City capital improvement and mapping projects; participate in boundary, topographic, improvement, and construction surveys; provide benchmark and City monument references.
2. Operate and maintain a variety of surveying equipment including metal detectors, levels, total stations, GPS equipment, and data collectors; operate a computer using assigned survey software.
3. Prepare and maintain a variety of records and documentation; ensure accurate written field notes of work performed showing lines, angles, distances, benchmarks, mathematical calculations and other data pertinent to the field survey in field books; prepare and verify mathematical calculations related to surveying and basic engineering; compute and adjust angles, distances, bearings, traverses and elevations; maintain and update assigned databases with information collected.
4. Establish and maintain monument ties and records; re-establish lost City survey monuments that exist throughout the City. Work with the City Surveyor to prepare DORA Monument Records; set survey monuments, monument boxes, and monument accessories.
5. Perform leveling runs to establish vertical control benchmarks for design, construction and public use; perform construction staking.
6. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
7. Work with a variety of City departments and outside contractors on construction projects as assigned; estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
8. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Methods, techniques, procedures and equipment used in surveying.
Trigonometry as applied to the computation of angles, areas, distances and traverses.
Design and construction theory and engineering design standards.
Operational characteristics of surveying equipment and tools.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Customer service procedures and principles.
Principles and practices of record keeping.
Mathematic principles including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Modern office technology and equipment, including computers and related software applications.
Applicable tools and equipment operations.
Applicable Federal, State, and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
Understand and interpret plans, specifications, diagrams, plats, maps, and legal descriptions.
Use GIS systems to gather information and plan surveys.
Gather, interpret, record, and apply field notes in the performance of survey duties.
Operate a variety of field surveying equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Perform complex mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.
Establish and maintain accurate records, logs, and files.
Interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, laws and regulations.
Operate and use modern office equipment including computer and various software applications.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
Two (2) years of increasingly responsible field surveying experience.
Training:
High School Diploma or G.E.D supplemented by college level course work in mathematics, land surveying or a related field.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
License or Certificate
Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Land Surveyor-Intern License (LSI) is desirable.
