DEFINITION
Perform a variety of duties in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; train new police officer recruits; perform leadworker activities over assigned staff, including assigning and reviewing daily work and providing input into performance evaluations; control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; participate in and conduct a variety of criminal investigations; provide support and assistance to special crime prevention programs; perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Police Department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from assigned Police Sergeant.
Exercises lead supervision over assigned police staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Perform leadworker functions including assigning and reviewing daily work of staff, providing input into performance evaluations, training other employees and acting as a resource to other staff; prepare journals and training reports reflective of the individual recruit officers regarding performance and counseling issues.
2. Patrol a designated area of the City to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes, incidents and disturbances; enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances; issue warnings and citations; direct traffic and manage crowds at fires, special events and other emergency situations; perform regular DUI checks and enforcement activities.
3. Train new officer recruits; provide feedback, counseling and evaluations during the training phases; inform and update supervisory personnel in issues relating to the training and progress of police recruits and proficient police officers.
4. Respond to critical incidents and to general public service calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony incidents, domestic disturbances, property control, civil complaints, stray animals and other incidents.
5. Conduct case management activities; prioritize cases; determine need for follow up interviews and paperwork; prepare associated written reports, including arrest and search warrants, supplementals and offense reports; obtain appropriate signatures when needed.
6. Serve search and arrest warrants; conduct searches of persons, vehicles and property; make arrests for crimes committed under Federal, State and local laws and codes; control and mitigate people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations.
7. Conduct follow-up on assigned cases; respond to mandatory service and court calls during irregular hours; identify suspects; conduct interviews and interrogations; apprehend, arrest and incarcerate offenders.
8. Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems; preserve good relationships with the general public; increase public education and awareness of the law, enforcement activities, personal safety and available resources through various programs; conduct crime prevention programs for neighborhoods, businesses, schools and adult groups; conduct security surveys for home owners and businesses.
9. Conduct follow-up on assigned cases; respond to mandatory service and court calls during irregular hours; identify suspects; conduct interviews and interrogations; apprehend, arrest and incarcerate offenders.
10. Act as liaison with District Attorney’s office on assigned on-going cases; testify in juvenile, civil, traffic, municipal and criminal courts and parole and DMV hearings; prepare and present evidence.
11. Collect, process, photograph and present evidence using scientific techniques including fingerprints, fibers, blood and related physical evidence.
12. Prepare, maintain and review a variety of records and logs; prepare a variety of reports; perform routine media requests in absence of supervising Sergeant.
13. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
Two (2) years of law enforcement experience.
Training:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by specialized training in criminal justice, police science, investigations or a related field.
Other combination of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
License or Certificate
Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license.
Possession of a valid P.O.S.T. basic certificate.
