DEFINITION
Supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of law enforcement staff involved in traffic and field patrol, investigations, crime prevention and community relations; oversee and participate in all work activities; coordinate activities with other agencies; perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from assigned Police Commander.
Exercises direct supervision over assigned police and administrative support staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of assigned staff; participate in the selection of assigned staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
2. Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives for assigned programs and functions; implement policies and procedures; evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications.
3. Oversee patrol for a designated area of the City to preserve law and order; enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances; plan, coordinate and supervise traffic control activities for special events, parades and street closures.
4. Supervise and respond to critical incidents and to general public service calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony incidents, domestic disturbances, property control, civil complaints, stray animals and other incidents; assume initial command; contact and advise appropriate staff.
5. Review and oversee a variety of criminal investigations involving narcotics and juvenile related crimes including child abuse and juvenile narcotics, fraud and other crimes; assign staff to cases and investigations; review and approve reports; review ongoing progress and updates; coordinate information and activities with outside agencies and jurisdictions.
6. Conduct follow-up on assigned cases; respond to mandatory service and court calls during irregular hours; determine immediate needs; supervise and conduct interviews and interrogations; apprehend, arrest and incarcerate offenders.
7. Prepare and update various reports, statistical data, manuals and other documents; review reports for compliance with operations and regulations.
8. Oversee the collection, processing, photographing and presenting of evidence using scientific techniques including fingerprints, fibers, blood and related physical evidence; conduct audits of evidence to determine applicability to case; evaluate evidence procedures and processes to ensure best methodology is used; oversee the release of evidence and property to citizens.
9. Perform administrative paperwork and case management; respond to inquiries from the public, media and staff related to specific cases; create and update departmental forms as needed; review contract for equipment used and ensure proper working order and maintenance of equipment; monitor caseloads for staff and document performance as needed.
10. Participate in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; implement adjustments.
11. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles of supervision and training.
Police methods and procedures including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control and investigation.
Rules of evidence pertaining to search, seizure and preservation.
Laws governing the apprehension, arrest and custody of persons accused of felonies, misdemeanors and petty offenses.
Principles and applications of crime prevention.
Operational characteristics of police equipment, vehicles and tools including firearms.
Principles and applications of public relations.
Principles and practices of evidence collection and analysis.
Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation.
Principles and practices of record keeping.
Advanced mathematical concepts, including statistical analysis and comparison.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
Five (5) years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience.
Training:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by specialized training in criminal justice, police science, investigations or a related field.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
License or Certificate
Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license.
Possession of a valid P.O.S.T. basic certificate.
