DEFINITION
Respond to a variety of incidents including emergency medical and fire response, and responses involving hazardous materials, vehicle extrication, technical rescue and non-emergency calls including welfare inquiries, public assistance, special events and activity standby; perform emergency medical interventions within the guidelines of certification and assist paramedics as needed; transport patients to the hospital; perform station and equipment inspections and maintenance; perform a variety of other duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from assigned Safety/Medical Officer, EMS Officer, Fire Captain or higher level staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Respond to emergency and non-emergency medical calls; perform emergency medical interventions within guidelines of certification and assist paramedics as needed during medical calls; transport patients to hospital as needed; write medical response reports as needed.
2. Prepare, submit and maintain reports on EMS activities, incidents, accidents and other related information; collect and submit paperwork from stations as needed.
3. Perform station maintenance; identify deficiencies in equipment and quarters; correct deficiencies when possible or report to station officer.
4. Operate, inspect and maintain emergency response equipment and vehicles; perform minor repairs on equipment and vehicles or report deficiencies to proper staff for other disposition; order necessary supplies.
5. Monitor inventory levels of medical and station supplies; order, restock, and deliver supplies as appropriate.
6. Obtain medical data including patient identification, medical history, type of accident or nature of illness, rescue measures preceding emergency care, care given at the scene and during transport and changes in diagnostic signs.
7. Participate in drills, training exercises classes and activities including but not limited to those related to emergency medical service, and other related areas.
8. Maintain skill levels, new equipment and procedure familiarization, and certifications which are relevant and/or required for assigned responsibilities.
9. Participate in public relations including station tours, school education programs, group activities, courtesy walk-through visits, and phone inquiries.
10. Perform at the Awareness level at hazardous materials incidents.
11. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of emergency medical response and CPR/First Aid.
Medical terminology and appropriate utilization.
Select and properly administer first aid and medical treatment appropriate to the emergency.
Geography and street layout of the City and surrounding area.
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Modern office technology and equipment, including computers and related software applications.
Applicable tools and equipment operations.
Applicable Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:

Experience and Training Guidelines
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
One (1) year of experience in emergency medical services.
Education and experience directed toward a career in the fire service preferred.
Training:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by the ability to complete specialized training in emergency medical services.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
License or Certificate
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado’s driver’s license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Emergency Medical Technician B certificate.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid CPR certificate.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification in the National Incident Management System.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Hazardous Materials Awareness certificate.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Driver Operator certificate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to balance, sit, walk, twist, demonstrate manual dexterity, grasp, talk, hear, and see. The employee will be exposed to smoke, heat and varying weather conditions that may be hot, cold or wet.
