DEFINITION

 

Drive, operate and maintain fire fighting apparatus and equipment; respond to fire alarms, emergency calls and non-emergency calls to protect life and property; conduct and participate in fire fighting activities, prevention, inspections and training; perform a variety of duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.

 

 

JOB CLASSIFICATION

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives general supervision from assigned Fire Captain or higher level staff.

 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

 

1.  Drive, operate and maintain all fire fighting and suppression apparatus and equipment; lay hose and regulate water pressure; calculate and monitor hydraulic conditions; direct engine hook-up; operate aerial ladder trucks; maneuver and extend retracting ladder; assist with or direct the cleaning and reloading of all equipment, tools and apparatus upon completion of fire or emergency response activities.

 

2.  Respond to fire alarms and emergency calls to protect life and property; assist in all phases of fire suppression; place fire hoses; set ladders; ventilate and enter burning structures to extinguish fires and rescue victims; operate pneumatic and auxiliary equipment such as generators and pumps; provide emergency medical service as needed; respond to non-emergency calls for service as necessary.

 

3.  Perform fire station and apparatus maintenance and cleaning activities; maintain station living quarters in a clean and orderly condition through routine clean-up procedures; identify deficiencies in equipment and quarters; report deficiencies to proper staff for other disposition.

 

4.  Inspect vehicles and equipment for proper operating conditions; perform routine and minor repairs and maintenance; identify needs for major repairs; maintain records of maintenance work performed; participate in testing all department equipment such as hoses, ladders, nozzles, ropes, protective breathing apparatus and protective clothing; monitor inventory and order parts and supplies for equipment as needed.

 

5.  Conduct and participate in drills and training exercises; develop skills in fire suppression, medical aid, apparatus operation and other related areas; conduct training related to use and maintenance of various equipment; evaluate participants.

 

6.  Participate in drills, training exercises classes and activities including but not limited to those related to fire fighting, emergency medical service, technical rescue, extrication, physical fitness and other related areas.

 

7.  Prepare and maintain a variety of records and logs; prepare a variety of reports.

 

8.  Perform fire prevention inspections of commercial occupancies and homes through departmental inspection program; identify fire and life safety hazards; provide suggestions for correction; schedule re-inspections for verification of correction; submit reports as needed.

9.  Participate in public relations, fire/safety education activities, and fire prevention activities including station tours, fire safety/fire suppression education away from the station, school education programs, group activities, fire drills, courtesy walk through visits, and phone inquiries.

 

10.  Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of:

 

Procedures and equipment used in modern fire fighting, emergency medical and paramedic response operations.

Operation, use and maintenance of pumps, fire apparatus and other fire equipment.

Mechanical and hydraulic principles of fire apparatus.

Geography and water systems of the City and surrounding areas.

Principles and practices of modern fire prevention and suppression.

Methods and techniques of public relations and instruction.

Safe fire fighting and work practices.

Principles and practices of emergency medical response and CPR/First Aid.

Principles and practices of record keeping.

English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Modern office technology and equipment, including computers and related software applications.

Applicable tools and equipment operations.

Applicable Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.

 

Ability to:

 

Drive, operate and maintain associated fire suppression and emergency medical response vehicles, apparatus and equipment in adverse weather and various traffic conditions.

Inspect, troubleshoot and repair a variety of fire suppression vehicles, apparatus and equipment.

Perform field calculations of hydraulics for effective operation of emergency equipment.

Analyze emergency situations and develop appropriate courses of action.

Participate in fire fighting and emergency response activities.

Observe and follow safe fire fighting and work practices.

Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public and City employees.

Establish and maintain accurate records, logs, and files.

Prepare a variety of technical and operational reports.

Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations.

Operate and use modern office equipment including computer and various software applications.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Speak, read, comprehend, and write the English language fluently.

 

 

Experience and Training Guidelines

Equivalent to:

 

 Experience:

 

 Three (3) years of increasingly responsible fire fighting experience.

 

 Training:

 

 High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by specialized training in fire science, emergency medicine, mechanics or a related field.

 

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

License or Certificate

 

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

 

Possession of a valid Firefighter II certificate.

 

Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician B certificate.

 

Possession of a valid Firefighter Driver Operator/Pumper license.

 

Possession of a valid Hazardous Materials Operations certificate.
