DEFINITION

 

Perform fire fighting, emergency medical response and advanced life support activities to protect life and property; respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency calls including structure fires, traffic collisions, hazardous materials incidents, building collapses and wildland fires; operate a variety of fire suppression and life-saving equipment; perform station and equipment maintenance; perform a variety of duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives general supervision from assigned Fire Captain or higher level staff.

 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

 

1.  Respond to fire and emergency alarms; perform all phases of fire suppression work including ventilation, overhaul, salvage and clean-up activities at fire scene; place fire hoses; set ladders; operate fire streams, ventilate and enter burning structures to extinguish fires and rescue victims; operate pneumatic and auxiliary equipment such as generators or pumps; operate rope systems, technical rescue and hazmat equipment.

 

2.  Provide emergency medical care and advanced life support at emergency and accident scenes which may include defibrillation, clearing airways, pulmonary ventilation, intubations, inserting IVs, splinting fractures, treating burns, emergency surgical procedures, performing CPR and administering medication; inform physicians of patient conditions.

 

3.  Assume responsibility for EMS scene in the absence of higher level staff; provide direction and supervision to other employees at an emergency medical scene; direct patient care and transport; obtain medical data including patient identification, medical history, type of accident or nature of illness, rescue measures preceding emergency care, care given at the scene and during transport and changes in diagnostic signs.

 

4.  Monitor and maintain necessary medical and station supplies; reorder supplies as needed.

 

5.  Participate in drills, training exercises classes and activities including but not limited to those related to fire fighting, emergency medical service, technical rescue, extrication, physical fitness and other related areas.

 

6.  Perform fire station and equipment maintenance and cleaning activities; maintain station living quarters in a clean and orderly condition through routine clean-up procedures; identify deficiencies in equipment and quarters; perform minor repairs on equipment and vehicles or report deficiencies to proper staff for other disposition.

 

7.  Conduct and participate in drills and training exercises; develop skills in fire suppression, medical aid, apparatus operation and other related areas; conduct emergency medical technician classes and evaluate and re-certify participants.

 

8.  Participate in public relations, fire/safety education activities, and fire prevention activities including station tours, fire safety/fire suppression education away from the station, school education programs, group activities, fire drills, courtesy walk through visits, and phone inquiries.

 

9.  Perform fire prevention inspections of commercial occupancies through departmental inspection program; identify fire and life safety hazards; provide suggestions for correction; schedule re-inspections for verification of correction; submit reports as needed.

 

10.  Prepare and maintain a variety of records and logs; prepare a variety of reports.

 

11.  Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Procedures and equipment used in modern fire fighting, emergency medical and paramedic response operations.

Geography and street layout of the City and surrounding area.

Perform a variety of fire suppression, emergency medical response and technical rescue activities including administering advanced life support.

Experience and Training Guidelines

Minimum Requirements:

 

 Experience:

 

 Two (2) years of increasingly responsible fire fighting or emergency medical response experience.

 

 

 

 Training:

 

 High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by specialized firefighter and emergency medicine/paramedic training.

 

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

 

License or Certificate

 

Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver’s license.

 

Possession of a valid National Registry EMT Paramedic and State of Colorado EMT-P certificate.

 

Possession of a valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support certificate.

 

Possession of a valid Firefighter II certificate.

 

Possession of a Basic Life Support certificate.

 

Possession of a valid Fire Fighter Driver Operator Utility license.

 

Possession of a Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers certificate.

 

Possession of a valid Hazardous Materials Operations certificate.

 

Possession of certification in the National Incident Management System.
