DEFINITION
Supervise and coordinate recreation activities and operations within the Parks and Recreation Department including aquatics, senior citizen programs, health and wellness programs, adult and youth sports, special events and general recreation programs; coordinate assigned activities with other divisions, outside agencies and the general public; provide highly responsible and complex staff assistance to the Recreation Superintendent.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general direction from the Recreation Superintendent.
Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of assigned staff; participate in the selection of assigned staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
2. Coordinate the organization, staffing and operational activities for the assigned recreation programs including aquatics, senior citizen programs, health and wellness programs, adult and youth sports, special events and general recreation; coordinate assigned recreation program activities with those of other divisions and outside agencies and organizations.
3. Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities; recommend and implement resulting policies and procedures; identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures; identify resource needs and review with appropriate management staff; implement improvements.
4. Direct, coordinate and review the work plan for assigned recreation services, activities and facilities; assign work activities and projects; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems.
5. Research new program ideas and trends to stay in tune with community interests; prepare program announcements and information; calculate program costs and establish registration fees.
6. Manage and promote specific activities within the assigned recreation program; oversee the development and review of schedules and classes; prepare program event and facility marketing material including news releases, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets and brochures.
7. Present programs to special interest groups, service clubs and schools; work closely with local media and TV stations to cover events and programs.
8. Prepare and review reports related to program participation and updates.
9. Participate in the development and administration of assigned program budget; forecast funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; recommend adjustments as necessary; locate, write and track grants related to assigned programs.
10. Manage and oversee capital improvement projects as related to assigned recreation facilities; develop requests for proposals; make recommendations for bid awards; track project status throughout allotted timeframe.
11. Provide staff assistance to the Recreation Superintendent; participate on a variety of committees; prepare and present staff reports and other correspondence as appropriate and necessary.
12. Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of recreation and leisure services.
13. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Minimum requirements:
Experience:
Four (4) years of responsible recreation program development experience including one year of administrative and/or lead supervisory experience.
Training:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation administration, leisure studies or a related field.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
License or Certificate
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver’s license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification is desirable.
Comply with Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards for handling and securing payment card information.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, the City of Grand Junction Leadership Track certification within two (2) years of appointment.
