DEFINITION

 

Perform technical duties and responsibilities in the repair, maintenance, and upgrading of treatment plants, electrical systems and instrumentation; troubleshoot, diagnose and calibrate electrical and electronic equipment and systems; research, test and order parts required for system maintenance; perform a variety of duties relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives direction from Wastewater Maintenance Supervisor.

 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

 

1.  Perform maintenance and repair on all electrical systems of the treatment plant and related equipment and facilities; troubleshoot, diagnose, and test system; modify and replace components; calibrate equipment and components.

 

2.  Perform installation of new electrical wiring for buildings, equipment, and components; determine what fittings and devices to use and ensure electric code requirements are met.

 

3.  Perform maintenance and repair on all heating systems; test and repair temperature controls, gas valves, airflow switches, and plumbing; test for gas leaks and overall condition of all components.

 

4.  Order all parts necessary to perform electrical maintenance and repairs; research vendors to locate necessary items, determine compatibility, and to obtain competitive prices; purchase items for electrical inventory and repair.

 

5.  Weld cracked or broken parts; design, layout and fabricate new structures.

6.  Operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, trucks and other equipment in the performance of assigned duties.

 

7.  Respond to plant emergencies and problems after hours and on weekends as required.

 

8.  Establish and maintain accurate equipment, maintenance, and repair records.

 

9.  Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

 

 

 

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of:

 

Operational characteristics of electrical systems and internal components.

Principles, methods, materials, and tools employed in electrical systems, electronic and mechanical repair, and maintenance work

Operating characteristics and application of electrical test equipment.

Operational principles of a treatment facility.

Methods and techniques of troubleshooting designing and calibrating electric and electronic systems and components.

Practices and techniques of metal cutting, welding, and flame spray buildup.

Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Principles and practices of record keeping.

Standards, calculations, and methods used to measure the operating efficiency of machinery and equipment used.

English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Applicable tools and equipment operations.

Applicable Federal, State, and local codes, laws and regulations.

 

Ability to:

 

Perform a variety of diagnostic, repair, maintenance, and cleaning duties on electrical and mechanical systems.

Operate a variety of maintenance and repair equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Read and understand technical manuals, blueprints, shop drawings and sketches including electrical schematics and symbols.

Inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair, electrical and electronic malfunctions.

Perform mathematical calculations necessary for electronic and electrical troubleshooting.

Respond to requests and inquiries from the public and City employees.

Establish and maintain accurate records, logs, and files.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Perform preventive maintenance on plant equipment and systems.

Perform assigned work in accordance with appropriate safety practices and regulations.

Accurately read and record data from gauges and meters.

Interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, laws and regulations.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

Experience and Training Guidelines

Minimum Requirements:

 

 Experience:

 

 Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment, systems, and components.

 

 Training:

 

Associate degree from an accredited institution with course work in electrical technology or related field.

 

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

 

License or Certificate

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver’s license.

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Journeyman electrician license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to see, hear, sit, stand, walk, kneel, squat, stoop, repeatedly twist the upper body, and push or drag objects. The employee is regularly required to perform heavy lifting. The employee is regularly exposed to chemicals and materials that result in additional exposure to fumes, dust, and air contaminants. Job may require work in confined spaces. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, and use power and noise producing tools and equipment. The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
