DEFINITION

 

Perform maintenance and technical duties and responsibilities in the operation and maintenance of the City's water treatment plant; ensure compliance with City and mandated water treatment quality standards; perform a variety of duties relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

 

 

JOB CLASSIFICATION

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives direction from the Water Operations Supervisor.

 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

 

1.  Operate water treatment plant to produce finished water that meets or exceeds State drinking water standards for purity through dual media filtration, pre and post chlorination, fluoridation, and corrosion control.

 

2.  Monitor plant processes and functions; read meters, gauges, graphs, and control panels; collect samples of raw and treated water; perform routine laboratory tests to ensure quality of treated water; modify plant operations to adjust to changing processing needs including the adjustment of pumps, flow valves, and feeder systems.

 

3.  Operate, maintain, and repair plant machinery, equipment, and vehicles including pumps, valves, motors, engines, meters, drives, tanks, and compressors.

 

4.  Maintain and repair open reservoirs, pump stations, steel water tanks, vaults, and valves at various locations.

 

5.  Maintain computerized plant records in compliance with state and federal requirements; prepare records for use in reports to various agencies.

 

6.  Perform general plant maintenance including cleaning, painting, and repairing plant facilities; perform a full range of grounds maintenance duties involved in maintaining landscaped and un-landscaped grounds.

 

7.  Receive and store chemicals, equipment, and parts necessary for plant operations.

 

8.  Maintain security of plant facilities.

 

9.  Respond to emergency situations associated with the water treatment plant.

 

10.  Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of:

 

Practices, principles, and procedures used in the operation and maintenance of water treatment and purification facilities and systems.

Standard principles of hydraulics, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.

Operational characteristics of water treatment plant equipment and systems.

Basic principles of chemistry, biology, and mathematics.

Basic laboratory methods including sampling techniques.

Principles and procedures used in the proper handling of chemicals.

Occupational hazards and standard safety practices including those used for entrance into confined spaces.

Principles and practices of record keeping.

English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Modern office technology and equipment, including computers and related software applications.

Applicable tools and equipment operations.

Applicable Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.

 

Ability to:

 

Operate, monitor, and maintain water treatment plant facilities and systems.

Operate equipment, tools and machines necessary to operate, repair and maintain plant equipment and facilities.

Diagnose operating problems and take effective courses of action to adjust systems according to needs.

Comply with water mandated treatment and water purification procedures and methods.

Perform inspections and preventive maintenance of treatment plant facilities and equipment.

Establish and maintain accurate records, logs, and files.

Compile data and material.

Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations.

Operate and use modern office equipment including computer and various software applications.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

Experience and Training Guidelines

Minimum Requirements:

 

 Experience:

 

 Three (3) years of experience in water treatment plant operations and maintenance.

 

 Training:

 

 High School Diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by supplemented by specialized training in water treatment, biology, chemistry, or a related field.

 

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

 

License or Certificate

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver’s license.

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain within five (5) years of hire, a valid Class A Water Treatment Plant Operator certificate issued by the State of Colorado, depending upon certification level at time of hire.

Physical Conditions:

 

The job is characterized by:

 

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

 

The following physical activities are very or extremely important in accomplishing the job’s purpose and are performed on a daily basis:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand for prolonged periods, perform repetitive motions, kneel, squat, stoop, and repeatedly twist the upper body a significant part of the time. The employee is also required to walk a major part of the time and to lift heavy objects (more than 25 pounds) on a regular basis. The employee is required to see, hear, talk, and sit.
