DEFINITION

 

Operate a recycling collection truck; collect, sort, decontaminate, and transfer recyclable materials from customer locations to facility receptacles and/or areas; operate other specialized maintenance and recycling equipment; process recyclable material at facility.

 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives direction from the Recycling/Waste Reduction Supervisor.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

 

1.  Operate a recycling collection truck; collect, sort, decontaminate, and transfer recyclable materials from customer locations to facility receptacles and/or areas; collect and deliver plastic containers/totes; provide public with information regarding recycle collection process.

 

2.  Operate a variety of equipment to include forklifts, hand tools, skid steers, and other specialized maintenance and recycling equipment; perform safety inspections, routine maintenance and repairs on equipment.

 

3.  Collect and sort recyclable material at the facility; offload incoming trucks and trailers; compress and stack recyclable material; service and empty drop off tanks; provide drop off customer service and instruction.

 

4.  Maintain municipal cleanliness; ensure walkways, fence line and other buildings within proximity of facility are clear of debris/hazards; tarp material to maintain quality of commodities.

 

5.  Perform safety duties to include safe material handling and cone placement for traffic control.

 

6.  Plan and organize routes for recycling pickup.

 

7.  Maintain and order parts, tools, materials, and equipment.

 

8.  Prepare and maintain a variety of reports, records, and logs related to inspections and work completed.

 

9.  Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of:

 

Types and level of maintenance and repair activities performed in a specialized equipment maintenance program.

Operational characteristics and maintenance requirements of tools and equipment.

Traffic laws, ordinances, regulations, and safety rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operation.

Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Customer service procedures and principles.

Principles and practices of record keeping.

Applicable tools and equipment operations.

Applicable Federal, State, and local codes, laws, and regulations.

 

Ability to:

 

Perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair work.

Use and operate hand tools, vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment, power tools, and equipment required to perform work in a safe and efficient manner.

Operate equipment and machinery.

Learn the geography and street system of the City.

Respond to requests and inquiries from the public and City employees.

Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Establish and maintain accurate records, logs, and files.

Interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, laws, and regulations.

Operate and use modern office equipment including computer and various software applications.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

 

Experience and Training Guidelines

Minimum Requirements:

 

 Experience:

 

Two years (2) of increasingly responsible experience in general labor, maintenance and repair, or construction.

 

 Training:

 

 High School Diploma or G.E.D.

 

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

 

License or Certificate

 

Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire, a valid Colorado Class “B” commercial driver’s license with an air brake endorsement.

 

Some assignments may require the ability to obtain certifications specific to area of assignment.

Physical Conditions:

 

The job is characterized by:

 

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

The following physical activities are very or extremely important in accomplishing the job’s purpose and are performed daily:

 

Position requires hearing, talking, sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements. The position requires both near and far vision for inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. Lifting, carrying,

and pushing tools, equipment and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more is also required. Materials and chemicals may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. Job may require work in confined spaces. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions. The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, vibration, and street traffic. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
