DEFINITION

 

Perform a variety of duties in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; lead for high profile and complex case investigations in support of the Grand Junction Police Department; provide support and maintain a high level of stability in investigations through experience, mentoring, training, consistency, and long-term knowledge of the investigation’s unit; perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Grand Junction Police Department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives general supervision from assigned Police Sergeant.

 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

 

1.  Conduct case investigations, including but not limited to fraud, forgery, missing persons and runaways, computer, and criminal complaints; lead in high profile and complex case investigations.

2.  Act as advisory court witness with District Attorney’s office on assigned on-going cases; testify in juvenile, civil, traffic, municipal and criminal courts, and parole and DMV hearings.

3.  Serve search and arrest warrants; conduct searches of persons, vehicles and property; make arrests for crimes committed under Federal, State and local laws and codes; control and mitigate people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations.

 

4.  Conduct follow-up on assigned cases; respond to mandatory service and court calls during irregular hours; identify suspects; conduct interviews and interrogations; apprehend, arrest and incarcerate offenders.

 

5.  Develop and maintain good relationships with a variety of community organizations, law enforcement agencies, District Attorney’s office, and the general public.

 

6.  Conduct case management activities; prioritize cases; determine need for follow up interviews and paperwork; prepare associated written reports, including arrest and search warrants, supplementals and offense reports; obtain appropriate signatures when needed.

7.  Collect, process, photograph and present evidence using scientific techniques including fingerprints, fibers, blood and related physical evidence; provide testimony in court as necessary in support of actions taken and chain of custody of evidence.

8.  Attend training consistent with assigned duties, including obtaining and maintaining certifications necessary for assigned roles and responsibilities; maintain current knowledge of all different investigations division responsibilities; stay current on laws and policies related to the investigations division.

9.  Enter, modify, update, and retrieve data on a variety of databases regarding stolen and recovered property, driver's licenses, vehicle registration information, and warrants; receive, interpret, and forward information to the appropriate court and or certified law enforcement personnel.

10.  Mentor and assist with training for new detectives and patrol officers.

11.  Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Experience and Training Guidelines

Minimum Requirements:

 

 Experience:

 

Three (3) years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience, with one (1) year assigned to Investigations. Supplemented with specialized training in investigations.

 

 Training:

 

 High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by specialized training in criminal justice, police science, investigations or a related field.

 

Other combination of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

 

License or Certificate

 

Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license.

 

Possession of a valid P.O.S.T. basic certificate.
