DEFINITION
Perform a variety of duties in the enforcement of laws and prevention of crimes, including traffic enforcement, crash investigation, and crash reconstruction; work with City departments to improve traffic safety by reducing traffic crash related injuries and property damage; provide the community with traffic safety education and develop partnerships with traffic engineering to enhance public traffic safety; perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Grand Junction Police Department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from assigned Police Sergeant.
PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Patrol City roadways on motorcycles to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes, incidents, and disturbances; enforce traffic laws; issue warnings and citations.
2. Respond to traffic crashes and provide immediate assistance to injured parties; secure the scene of traffic incidents; lead investigator for serious bodily injury and/or fatal crash reconstruction, expert testimony, and prosecution assistance.
3. Review and analyze crash data to identify trends, patterns, and high-risk areas; develop strategies to prevent future incidents; collaborate with traffic engineers to implement engineering solutions aimed at improving traffic safety.
4. Provide escorts for high-profile dignitaries or assist with event safety planning and traffic management during special events and emergency situations to ensure public safety.
5. Provide community traffic safety education to reduce traffic crashes and related injuries; assist with instructing law enforcement officers in crash investigation, evidence collection, report writing and traffic enforcement.
6. Carry out general patrol duties, respond to calls for service, enforce criminal laws, conduct investigations, and aid fellow officers when needed; mentor and assist with training for patrol officers.
7. Conduct case management activities; prioritize cases, determine need for follow-up interviews and paperwork; prepare associated written reports including arrest and search warrants, supplementals and offense reports; obtain appropriate signatures when needed.
8. Serve search and arrest warrants; conduct searches of persons, vehicles and property; make arrests for crimes committed under Federal, State and local laws and codes; control and mitigate people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations.
9. Conduct follow-up on assigned cases; respond to mandatory service and court calls during irregular hours; identify suspects; conduct interviews and interrogations; apprehend, arrest and incarcerate offenders.
10. Act as liaison with District Attorney’s office on assigned on-going cases; testify in juvenile, civil, traffic, municipal and criminal courts and parole and DMV hearings; prepare and present evidence.
11. Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems; preserve good relationships with the public; increase public education and awareness of the law, enforcement activities, personal safety, and available resources through various programs; conduct crime prevention programs for neighborhoods, businesses, schools, and adult groups; conduct security surveys for homeowners and businesses.
12. Collect, process, photograph and present evidence using scientific techniques including fingerprints, fibers, blood and related physical evidence.
13. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
Two (2) years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience on a designated law enforcement traffic unit, or equivalent experience.
Training:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by specialized training in criminal justice, police science, investigations, or a related field.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license with motorcycle endorsement.
Possession of a valid P.O.S.T. basic certificate.
Possession of level I, II, and III Crash Reconstruction Certification.
Possession of or the ability to obtain Auto/Ped Reconstruction Certification, Auto/Motorcycle Reconstruction Certification, Crash Data Retrieval Technician Certification, Certified Grand Junction Police Department Motor Officer Instructor, and Radar/Lidar Instructor.
Completion of Motor Officer Certification Training.
