DEFINITION
Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance of the City of Grand Junction golf courses; including planning, maintenance, repair and renovation of golf courses; perform grounds keeping activities; plant and maintain turfgrass, trees, and shrubs; install, operate, and repair irrigation and drainage systems; groom and maintain golf course greens; operate light maintenance equipment and trucks; apply fertilizers and chemicals safely; maintain course facilities; coordinate assigned activities with other divisions, departments and outside agencies; provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Golf Superintendent and the Director of Golf.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Golf Superintendent.
Exercises direct supervision of assigned seasonal staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Assist in the planning and managing of golf course, renovation and improvements including but not limited to the design and placement of tees, sand bunkers, trees, flower beds and other course features; critique of plans and specifications of golf course facilities; provide technical soil and turfgrass information; acquire equipment and purchase necessary supplies to maintain golf course properties.
2. Inspect the condition of assigned systems, grounds, equipment, and facilities; perform installations, repairs, and replacements as necessary.
3. Plant, water and maintain landscaped areas consisting of turf, bushes, trees, flowers, and shrubs; design, pre-order, and maintain pots, barrels, and other containers; trim and prune bushes, trees and shrubs; stake trees as necessary; water, mow, weed, renovate, and aerate turf; edge and trim around fence lines and other items.
4. Clean and maintain assigned areas including grounds, golf course restrooms, and clubhouse area; pick up debris and litter.
5. Monitor the condition of turf including fairways, greens and rough; prepare and repair turf before and after play; mow, aerate, top dress and fertilize course as directed.
6. Perform a variety of duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical wiring in assigned facilities; install, adjust, maintain and repair electrical timers, electronic and hydraulic valves and controllers.
7. Identify turf, shrub, and tree diseases, parasites, and other problems; calibrate and apply herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, and fertilizers safely and accurately; maintain records of fertilizers and chemicals used.
8. Respond to requests and inquiries from customers and the general public; conduct general education classes related to assigned areas; inform the public of upcoming maintenance activities.
9. Operate and maintain irrigation and sprinkler systems including pump stations, underground piping, valves, wiring, sprinklers, and controllers; check for broken lines, heads, and other parts; determine watering needs for assigned areas and establish watering schedules.
10. Participate in the maintenance and operation of the golf courses; answer questions and provide assistance to the general public.
11. Prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports, and logs.
12. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
Two years (2) of general golf course maintenance experience.
Training:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or the ability to obtain a valid Colorado driver license.
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, Integrated Pest Management Certificate or pesticide license.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
The following physical activities are very or extremely important in accomplishing the job's purpose and are performed on a daily basis:
Position requires hearing, talking, sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements. The position requires both near and far vision for inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. Lifting, carrying and pushing tools, equipment and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more is also required. Materials and chemicals may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. Job may require work in confined spaces. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions. The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, vibration and street traffic. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
