 Resolution No. 91-94

 

 A Resolution Supporting the Efforts of the Committee for the Museum District to Create a Cultural District

 

WHEREAS,  the Museum of Western Colorado is charged with acquiring and preserving objects and information concerning cultural and natural history in Western Colorado;

 

WHEREAS,  these objects and information are used for education, research, interpretation and exhibition; to increase appreciation for the area's heritage, to enhance quality of life and to provide economic benefit; and

 

WHEREAS,  the Museum of Western Colorado is the most popular tourist attraction in Grand Junction, ranking third in Mesa County only to the Colorado National Monument and the Grand Mesa; and

 

WHEREAS,  in 1993, more than 100,000 residents and tourists visited the Museum's various sites, contributing $3 million to the local economy; and

 

WHEREAS,  Mesa County citizens, have since 1974, contributed to the operational funding of the Museum of Western Colorado through a property tax assessment, which will expire at the end of 1995; and

 

WHEREAS,  operational funding for the Museum of Western Colorado will continue with the passage of a ballot referendum on November 8, 1994, allowing for collection of 1/10 of one percent, or one penny on $10, sales tax on taxable items sold in Mesa County, beginning January 1, 1995.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAND JUNCTION THAT the Grand Junction City Council supports the Committee for the Museum District in their efforts to create a Cultural District in Mesa County.
