City of Grand Junction, Colorado
Resolution No. 24-99
AN RESOLUTION REPEALING THE REQUIREMENT
FOR FALLOUT SHELTERS IN ALL BUILDINGS
Recitals. The City Council of Grand Junction makes the following findings:
a. On February 4, 1970, the City Council adopted a resolution to require that fallout shelters be included in all public buildings which are built in the City of Grand Junction.
b. At the time the resolution was adopted, there was a safety need for fallout shelters to be included in plans for public buildings.
c. Due to changes in political climate, the federal government is not as concerned about the threat of nuclear attack as it was in the 70's and as such local government can achieve a cost savings in construction of public buildings by not designing and constructing nuclear shelters.
d. The city is designing and constructing a new city hall which will not have a nuclear fallout shelter if this resolution is repealed but will have other security and public safety enhancements.
e. A resolution by the City Council may be repealed by a subsequent resolution.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
The Resolution adopted in 1970 requiring fallout shelters to be included in plans for all public buildings shall be repealed.
.
PASSED AND ADOPTED on this 17th day of February, 1999.
