DEFINITION
Plan, coordinate, assign, direct and participate in fire suppression, emergency medical service, hazardous materials response, rescue, fire prevention and inspection activities at an assigned station on an assigned shift; ensure that all assigned activities are carried out effectively, efficiently and according to department guidelines and policies; perform a variety of duties relative to assigned areas of responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from EMS Chief and assigned Battalion Chief.
Exercises direct supervision over fire suppression staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of assigned staff; participate in the selection of assigned staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
2. Plan, coordinate, assign, direct and participate in fire suppression, emergency medical service, hazardous materials response, rescue, fire prevention and inspection activities at an assigned station on an assigned shift; ensure all assigned activities are carried out effectively, efficiently and according to department guidelines and policies.
3. Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives for assigned programs and functions; implement policies and procedures; evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications.
4. Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures; identify resource needs; review with appropriate management staff; participate in the development and implementation of emergency plans; prepare and present staff reports and other correspondence as appropriate and necessary.
5. Respond to alarms involving fire, medical aid, hazardous substances and rescue work; assume incident command and conduct assessment tactics, strategy development and implementation; determine preliminary origin and cause of fire at emergency scenes; preserve evidence.
6. Direct and perform firefighting duties; place fire hoses, set ladders, operate fire streams, ventilate and enter burning structures, perform search and rescue services, and overhaul operations; supervise and assist in rendering medical care at all emergency incidents.
7. Oversee and perform fire station and equipment maintenance and cleaning activities; maintain station living quarters in a clean and orderly condition through routine clean-up procedures; identify deficiencies in equipment and quarters; perform minor repairs on equipment and vehicles or report deficiencies to proper staff for other disposition.
8. Prepare, review, and update various reports, statistical data, manuals, and other documents; review reports for compliance with operations and regulations.
9. Participate in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; implement adjustments.
10. Serve as liaison for the Fire Department with other divisions, departments and outside agencies; supervise and participate in fire prevention inspections and public education activities; coordinate public relations activities and interact with various news media; negotiate and resolve sensitive and controversial issues.
11. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
Five (5) years of increasingly responsible fire suppression, emergency medical response or fire prevention experience.
Training:
Associates Degree in fire science or a related field of study.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
License or Certificate
Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license.
Possession of a valid Fire Officer I certificate.
Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician B certificate.
Possession of a valid Hazardous Materials Operations certificate.
Possession of a valid Driver Operator Utility certificate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to balance, sit, walk, twist, demonstrate manual dexterity, grasp, talk, hear, and see. The employee will be exposed to smoke, heat and varying weather conditions that may be hot, cold or wet.
