Report on the 2007 Bill of Rights Commemoration
Participation in the annual Bill of Rights event has waned this year and due to the amount of time it takes to organize this small event, I would recommend we suspend this event.
In 2007, there were about 20 participants and about 13 additional members in the audience. It was broadcast but it is unknown how many viewers watched the event.
Although, remembering this day is important, few citizens and few local officials have been present. In 2007, the City Manager and City Attorney were there, two Councilmembers besides the Mayor, one County Commissioner (Steve A.), one other County elected official but there were no City Youth Council or Teen Leadership Commission, there were no other County staffers.
Besides those on the program, Councilmembers Todd and Thomason, City Manager Kadrich, City Attorney Shaver, County Assessor Brewer, Bob Caskey, Democratic party Chair Mary Beth Pyle, Kids Voting Executive Director Martha Graf, parents of participants, another member of the SAR, and a few other Boy Scouts.
A press release was sent out and the Daily Sentinel newspaper did include it in their briefs. A dozen invitations were sent out to a variety of organizations. There was TV news coverage. Jessica Peterson sent out a blast to County Officials and Department Heads.
